Compeer in New York State

Compeer affiliate locations in New York State are sponsored by a variety of mental health and non-profit organizations.

Based on the success of the Compeer program in Rochester, the NYS Office of Mental Health collaborated with Compeer to stimulate the development of new programs throughout the state through seed grants. Through federal block grants and OMH funding, the Compeer New York State office was established to provide supportive leadership -- e.g., through technical assistance, on-site consultation, training, best practice management, and recruitment support -- to existing programs and to oversee the development of new locations.

Through its time-tested model and evidence based practices, Compeer creates programs to meet the diverse needs of communities that want to improve and positively impact the lives of individuals and families living with mental health challenges.

Results

In an era of healthcare cost containment and systems transformation, Compeer addresses a New York state problem by providing a creative and cost-effective solution through utilization of volunteers in one-to-one supportive and mentoring relationships to foster social inclusion and community integration in natural settings.

Individuals in mental health recovery matched with Compeer volunteers use mental health services more appropriately and have lower re-hospitalization rates than consumers without adequate support systems.
